John Gilmer letters [manuscript], 1861, 1867.

In a lengthy letter to his son, 1861 April [17?] Gilmer announces that Virginia has seceded, predicts a long and ruinous war, the defeat of the United States, Lincoln's assumption of dictatorial powers and proclamation of universal emancipation to win English sympathy, abuse of power by Jefferson Davis, increase of state powers, bankruptcy on both sides and a new "federative" government. He urges his son to study law if he survives the war in order to serve his country best as a good and great lawyer. In a draft of a letter to General J. M. Schofield Gilmer responds to the latter's order to hold an election in Richmond for delegates to the State Convention. Gilmer, himself a conservative candidate, objects to an extension of time for voting as 3/4ths of those eligible have voted, voting has not been extended elsewhere, and the election is legally closed.
